The Pussy Willow in Europe is a symbol of Spring and new beginnings. The catkins or flowers are the first to appear in late winter/ early spring. In Austria it is used extensively as decorations for spring and branches are decorated with painted egg shells and other Easter decorations. In Europe branches are carried to church on Palm Sunday instead of palm leaves to be blessed in the church. They are preserved at home, usually attached to a crucifix, during the coming year.
The willow grows easily and prolifically. It is associated with power and strength as well as femininity, fertility, emotions, love, protection, healing since pagan times. 
Witches’ brooms were said to be traditionally made with an ash handle and birch twigs bound with willow. Witches wands were also made out of willow.

Willow bark contains salicin, or Salicylic acid, used to make aspirin. 
Infusions from the bark have long been used as a remedy for chills, rheumatism, and fevers. Willow sap applied to the skin can remedy acne, and a strong decoction of boiling the bark and leaves in water can be rubbed into the scalp for dandruff.
These delicate catkins are also part of the strength of the willow, providing the first nectar for the bees in Spring.
