39 Steps

This is a fairly obsolete interpretation of the word 'scale' - (n) relating to a ladder; a series of steps or staircase; a means of ascending.

As a side note, I found that there are no less than 27 different meanings and definitions of the word 'scale'. However, this is nothing compared to the word 'set' which holds the record for 464 individual definitions in the OED.

I really feel for people learning English sometimes! :)
