Doing a quick tour of the garden this morning, I discovered that these leaves have sprung up in the bag which I planted sorrel in last year. A closer inspection (and a cautious nibble!) revealed that they are almost certainly not sorrel, however - texture seems wrong and they don't have that distinctively lemony aroma and taste.

It could be, of course, that the differences are just because these are older plants compared to the fresh young leaves that I was harvesting last year and they are OK. But better safe than sorry (or sorrel!) - so they are going onto the compost and I've ordered some fresh plants to replace them. Expect to see sorrel soup on the menu once they arrive and get settled in.
