mitchell library

Stephen Mitchell 1789-1874 was a great benefactor of Glasgow and left a very large legacy for the "establishment and maintenance of a public library"
the present magnificent building was opened in 1911 and its 5 floors store 1.2 million reference works including some famous special reference collections eg.   Robert Burns literature, shipping, railways, architecture, the Glasgow collection and archives much in use for family histories today
A large modern extension to the west with multiple uses such as lending libray , cafe, computer centre and Mitchell Theatre has used the striking neo classical exterior of the former St. Andrews Halls of 1920 a much loved music venue which burned  down in 1962.
We book lovers look forward to the Aye Write book festival in April which uses many rooms and halls in the building
