Transcribing

I have been transcribing interviews all day. It takes ages -about an hour for five minutes of recording, much longer for one woman who spoke extremely fast and quietly!

Interesting things about transcripts:
- They show you how many times you say 'um' (lots)
- They show you who you connect with: more to and fro, more 'yeah' and 'mm's, a clearer sense that the interviewee is actually answering the question you asked
- with some interviews, especially the ones where the rapport is good between the two parties, as soon as the person talking has seen from non-verbal signals that the listener has understood what they're going to say, they abandon their sentence and move on to the next idea. This makes reading the transcript quite tricky if you weren't there for the actual conversation /don't understand the context.

Laborious, but rewarding in a way!
