Who's Been Eating My Plants?

I bought my three year old Grandson a magnifying glass, so this morning I showed him the best places to look for bugs in the garden. We temporarily put them into a glass container and had a good look at them before releasing them back into the undergrowth. 
We never found the culprit that had eaten my pansies.
