Toothwort

Lathraea squamaria. Parasitic plant which grows on the roots of Hazel and Alder. Most of the plant is underground but in April it appears above ground as short shoots with spikes of two lipped dull purple flowers. It has no chlorophyll.
This example is in our National Nature Reserve and we saw it on the first walk we ever took in the Arnside / Silverdale AONB over thirty years ago. It still comes up in exactly the same place. When we moved to our present house ten years ago we found that we had some growing in the garden.
