April

A wood engraving of the month of April as depicted  by Clare Leighton in her book The Farmer's Year published in 1933.  The artist was born in England in 1898, her parents Robert and Marie Connor Leighton were authors. Clare trained at the Brighton College of Art and the Slade. After travelling she eventually became a naturalised American citizen in 1945 where she lived for the rest of her life.  Her ashes were buried in Waterbury Cemetery Connecticut.  Her art is strong and powerful and I love this book inherited from my father but  I would find them too dark to hang on the wall.

Busy day shopping cleaning the house.  We have old friends coming to lunch tomorrow on their way down to Cornwall. I used to share a flat with R in London with some others and we were working in Cape Town at the same time.
