The Last Light

The Magnolias
are putting forth new leaves.
They spring up tender
as new life always is.
They spring up in contrast
to the weathered oldsters
from last year's birthing.
Pale as young ghosts,
their crisp outlines
surprise and attract me.

They reflect the last light of the day.
They deny the coming of night.
