Waterfall on the Chattahoochie River

We spent the morning walking around Roswell, Ga. & what a beautiful day for it--sunny & about 70 degrees! We followed the trail that led down to the old covered bridge that spans the Chattahoochie River & saw the old mill that is currently being renovated. Further down the trail we came accross  parts of the old wheel that had powered it in the past, then followed the trail up & down to the dam that's pictured here.
When General Sherman & his troops came through this area during the Civil war, he gave orders to burn all the mills in Roswell (the mills manufactured wools for the uniforms of the confederate soldiers, as well as a variety of their supplies). Since most of the men were off fighting, there were approx. 400 women & children who worked in the mills, under terrible conditions. General Sherman, not wanting the mills to be re-built & then having the skilled women workers resume their production of goods, issued orders to round up all the women & children & send them north to prisoner of war camps. He received very bad press at the time for those actions, & rightfully so!
We also stopped by Bulloch Hall ( the childhood home of Martha (Mittie) Bulloch, mother of Theodore Roosevelt), & toured Barrington Hall, the home of the King family for over 160 years, made wealthy by those same textile mills burned by General Sherman. The Kings fled to Savannah to escape from Sherman's advance, & while gone their estate was used by Union officers as their quarters. The estate was so beautiful, & I was torn between blipping the home or the waterfall. Heading to Bowling Green, Kentucky tomorrow morning to look around! :)
