Silent Plankton

Running late today and away in Anglesey with terrible Internet - even the 3G signal on my iPhone.

Here is a picture of our friend Emeritus Professor Peter Williams, a Bangor University Marine Biologist who has curated with friends an amazing website and exhibition on Silent Plankton or, to use the full exhibition title: 'Plankton Shape And Form As An Inspiration In Art And Design' . Essentially, it is about the unseen microscopic beauty of plankton, but also about how it is both such a natural phenomenon as well as a major inspiration for art and design throughout history. It relys heavily on the inspiration of the scientific illustrations of Ernst Haeckel.

Peter is stood by his own favourite, which is the final work of the wonderful appliqué embroidery of Karen Nicol, and titled Out of the Blue and into the Black after Neil Young. This was the first artist he ever managed to get a corporation cough up money for (Shell in this case).

The exhibition is part of the 2012 Gwyl Beaumaris Festival, and can be seen at the Beaumaris Canolfan until 14th June.

Had a nightmare drive today from Silsden to Anglesey leaving at 09:30 and arriving at 15:30. Every car in England and Wales was on the road. The only highlight of that epic journey (apart from arriving) was a stop at the wonderful floating visitor centre at Brockholes Nature Reserve near Preston. This was going to be my blip subject of the day until Peter called around the house in Beaumaris and invited us over for a private tour.

Will upload more to blipfolio once I have proper Internet access. It is a nightmare uploading off iPhone and dodgy 3G signal.

Happy Jubilee Bank Holiday all (if this should apply!)
