CannyScot's Day

A tragic Memorial

A very wet, day but with sunny spells.

In the morning I caught up with an online recording of the Photography Course, which I am finding very helpful. Eleanor and Rachel, meanwhile, were enjoying the Gym and Swimming Pool.

In the afternoon, despite the rain, we headed off for St. Abbs and Eyemouth. They are very typical East Coast coastal villages, formerly busy fishing ports but now holiday destinations. On the way to St. Abbs we stopped at Cove, where we saw this Memorial to the women and children who were left without their menfolk after a disaster befell the coracle fishing fleet in 1881. A total of 189 men were lost just off the coast, with 11 out of 21 local Cove fishermen. For such a small community, the loss must have affected so many people, none more so than the wives and children. The Memorial beautifully captures the tragic experience of great loss.

The second photograph is of the harbour at St. Abbs. You can see that we had a sunny spell but that a curtain of rain out at sea would soon descend upon us.
