Gently down the stream

Sandwich on the edge of the world

Today I had a day off and was whisked down to Hayling Island to sit by the sea.  We parked the car at the Hayling Oyster Beds, where large stretches of hardcore and shingle have been stacked in long banks away from the shore so the birds can breed.  You can see one bank on the near horizon.  The big worry currently is tern numbers, which have dropped by 85%.  Hopefully the work being done will help redress this.

There were one or two people around, but it felt vast and lonely.  Margins are strange places.  Of course we couldn't resist throwing our few sandwich crusts into the water to see if we could entice the birds over.  They were egg sandwiches.  Birds are such cannibals!

So that's the middle of the week.  Hope the day's been a good to you.  And thank you so much for being so very kind to my dandelion clock yesterday  xx
