Sexton beetle

Two of these Sextons, Nicrophorus humator,  were found amongst the many Cockchafers and rather fewer moths in my light trap this morning. They are lovely, bumbling creatures, but I wouldn't advise you to get too close. As they spend their time on or in dead bodies, they can be very smelly! I put them back to work quickly as I'm hoping they are currently stripping the Grass snake skeleton I half buried in one of the flower beds recently.
