As You Like It

The rather wonderful Globe Theatre on London's Southbank was our evening destination. Good friends are over from the States, and were keen to go there. We saw a terrific performance of Shakespeare's As You Like It. The staging and quality of acting were wonderful.

I love The Globe, opened in 1997. It has such a marvellous, intimate atmosphere. It is not exactly on the site of the original 16th century Globe, which was built in 1599, destroyed by fire in 1613, rebuilt in 1614 and then in use until 1642. However it is very close to where the original stood, about 730 feet - 230 metres - away. It is also the only building in modern central London that has a thatched roof.
