An egret on the lake in Kandy

We wake up groggy and with achy legs after a long sleep but come round a little after a nice home cooked breakfast. We wander into a very busy Kandy as its the last day of holiday. We don't go into the famous Temple of the Tooth as we've heard its just as good from the outside and the staff and security are rude and unwelcoming. We experience this first hand as we approach the gate ... they wouldn't let us in anyway it seems in what we are wearing although what we are wearing is fine!

We wander around the lake and there are loads of birds around including a huge pelican and this egret. Next stop is the Garrison Cemetery.  This cemetery contains 163 graves dating back to colonial times. The thing you notice is just how young most people were when they died – if you made it to forty you were of a ripe old age. The deaths were due to sunstroke, elephants, jungle fever and all sorts and there are quite a few very young children also. Harsha, the assistant caretaker, shows us round and its clear he loves his job. He is so enthusiastic and knows the Inscriptions on all the gravestones by heart. He shows us a picture of himself with Prince Charles who came to visit the cemetery in 2013.

We spend a few hours in an internet cafe,.Andy checking out what else we might do around Kandy and Fred doing blip. We have kottu for dinner before heading back to the guest house. We've not quite decided if we like kottu yet although it's growing on us. It's a traditional Sri Lankan dish made with roti, egg and vegetables.
