Fred & Andy

The giant java fig tree at Peradeniya

We spend the morning on our balcony with the BBC website trying to make some sense of who to vote for in the UK General election on Thursday. We are still confused after several hours so head out to mull on it further at the Botanical Gardens (Peradeniya). There were a few things we might have done around Kandy, for example, Sigriya, but the entrance fees are extortionate at 30 USD per person for something that would only take a couple of hours to see.

The gardens are lovely though and we see lots of birds, fruit bats, monkeys and squirrels. Andy also also spots a large snake but it heads into the undergrowth before he can get a pic. We see the famous giant java fig tree, meant to the the biggest in the world, covering 2,500m. Its actually a bit of a let down - its quite wide we guess but it doesn't strike us as that massive. It's been threatening thunder storms all afternoon but we're lucky and manage to stay dry. Back to town and we both buy new flip flops and then have dinner and a beer finally at Slighly Chilled ... nowhere is allowed to sell alcohol during the public holiday so what with that, staying in Ohiya and climbing Adams Peak we've not had one for a while ... well deserved after all that we think!
