Heart Flowered Serapias

I think that is the name of this orchid - Serapias cordigera.  We saw several orchids and broomrapes en route but I think it was the number and diversity of plants that was amazing rather than any particular rarity.  Every time we stopped for a rest or a drink or just to breathe there was something to look at - cyclamen, iris, daisies, thistles, grasses

The long descent into Cefalu was a bit demanding as the path wasn't always obvious through dense vegetation but we made it and were definitely ready to celebrate.

We saw a herd of wild/semi wild horses in the  hills - something rather more sleek and glossy than Dartmoor or New Forest ponies.  They were bickering amongst themselves and they had that crackling tension that makes you feel that if there were a sudden noise they would all up heels and gallop off.  They didn't and we went on to eat at a very quiet restaurant at Gibelmanna - just us and the staff watched by two cats (one who had broken a leg at some point) through the windows.
