The High Fells

Scafell Pike, Crinkle Crags and Great Carrs from Swirl How

Back in January of 2013 I took a trip to the Lakes with good friends A (Dr Mackem) and J. We had such a grand day out that we vowed to get away for such little adventures on a regular basis. Sadly, that hasn't gone quite to plan. This weekend was the first time we've got it together since then, a trip that was planned a month or so ago. We were incredibly blessed then that this day coincided with the first day of summer after a long period of cool, windy and generally unsettled weather. It was a perfect day for fell running.

We took a route from Elterwater to Wetherlam and Swirl How, descending to Three Shires Stone before climbing back up to Crinkle Crags to descend once again down the Band for a much needed pint of shandy at the Old Dungeon Ghyll. It was then a matter of a leisurely return back along delightful valley paths to Elterwater and, after another pint and an ice cream in the warm late afternoon sunshine, a final walk up to the Youth Hostel where we we started. The conversation all day was fascinating and the banter hilarious. Over almost 20 miles of fell and trail my legs held up very well. It proved to be another truly grand day out. And much needed.

The good doctor, appointed poet for the weekend, has said it all with great eloquence here. Thank you for making this happen my great friend.
