The highlight of the few days with son#1 was the discovery of Glaninchiquin - a remote valley on the Beara Peninsula. Quite a drive to get to it up and down teeny pot-holed roads and then suddenly this huge valley opens out - green fertile plain with oak trees and soay sheep, surrounded by an amphitheatre of rugged mountains and a colossal waterfall. A small cabin had been restored high up on the mountain - it had an Iron Age feel to it but dated from the mid 19C. Swallows zoomed out as we ventured in. We walked and walked and marvelled and marvelled. There was even a tea shop  called The Secret Garden (!) where the lads ate scones and I had home made apple pie and home made ice cream. Not only that, there were lakes and a superb stone circle beautifully positioned.  And the rare and blue butterwort. We finished the day with fish and chips on Bantry pier. Fab.
