Roman Remains

An early Roman Briton made a pot,
a head pot with a female face.
All that remains is
a slim nose and most of the lips,
high cheek bones, an inkling of eyes
and dot-dot-dotted eyebrow lines:
a head pot with a hint of face.

Did the potter make her so
she resembled someone he knew?
And, if so, who?

Not that it matters
when the pot is shattered
and cold millennia old.

Today we visited two ancient Roman sites - Segedunum (or Strong Fort) at Wallsend, once home to 600 Roman infantry and cavalry, and then Arbeia, site of a Roman Fort in South Shields. Both were so interesting and well worth a visit. Took oodles of photos but chose the one that inspired a poem for my blip.

So lucky with the weather. It changed from sunshine to chilly cloud but the rain stayed off until we'd finished our tours. Tomorrow we might not be so lucky as we move west to sites further along Hadrian's Wall, but we shall see. Should sleep well tonight - sightseeing is ridiculously exhausting!

....zzzzzz....
