The Chained Unicorn

The 'National Beast" of Scotland is a Unicorn  and I always think it is wonderful ( and typical ) that we favour a fabled animal, something that is powerful in the telling and fully of the energy of myth.  It  allows us to create our own story and helps us make our dreams real.

But the Scots Unicorn , when represented in heraldry, is always chained , a reference to the danger of the beast.  And that is a good reminder too.

This Unicorn stands above the gatepost at the side entrance to the  Palace of Holyroodhouse.  It holds the saltire aloft against the rugged background of  Salisbury Crags.

I noticed it when walking to the Parliament this morning, in early sunshine.
