Between fen and mountains

Looking down the ice well

Today we got lost above Serrabone. I had a GPS watch but the locals thought they knew the paths like the backs of their hands.  They had a map but their reading of it was not great.  Eventually I persuaded them that my GPS watch could pinpoint our position exactly.  By this time we were a long way off the path. The walk was a long one before we strayed off our route.  We ended up walking 14kms with 880 metres of ascent and we came back scratched and bruised having fought our way down rough paths full of spiky plants and brambles.  It was also hot although the dog did find a good way of cooling off in a mud bath.  We visited a little known ice well which was was high enough to pack snow into in winter which then turned to ice and was sold to anyone rich enough on the plain to afford it. Some ice in it today would not have come amiss!  We also saw some some neolithic cup carvings, a strange rock formation in the shape of a horse's head (I believe the ears were added and cemented in place) and some great views.  More photos can be seen here.
