Fred & Andy

Fun and games in the toilet!

It's an easy start to the day as we make our way to the airport for our flight to Pontianak on the west coast of Indonesian Borneo, or Kalamantan Borat to give it it's proper name. The flight is delayed as there's a massive thunderstorm but we'd rather not go up in that anyway so we're not bothered.

On arrival at Supadio Airport it's an easy process to get our visas on arrival and here we are ... Borneo! We are two of six westerners on the flight, all slightly older than the average backpacker. This particular area is meant to be quite a difficult to explore, mainly due to lack of infrastructure and not many tourists. We know it's going to be hard work but we're kind of looking forward to the challenge.

It appears there is no public transport so we take a fixed fee taxi to our city centre hotel. Andy said Indonesian cities are not pretty and this is no exception. No one in our hotel speaks English, other than a few words, and we have a huge palaver with them charging us what they call a deposit but because it so large we query it and realise it's part of our bill which we have already paid online to agoda. We try to explain and even try google translate but are not really getting anywhere until they phone a friend ... a marketing guy who speaks English and its cleared up and we get our money back. They are hugely apologetic and are all really sweet but we take note for the future and begin to learn a few words of Indonesian.

We wander around town and have some food. There's not much here really although it's a big city. We have a juice at a trendy looking "bar" although nowhere appears to serve alcohol. They guy running it speaks good English and we chat a little, finding our there is no public transport to speak of, also no tourist information so we use his internet and start to make a plan as to what we want to do and for an information gathering day tomorrow.

Fred takes a shower back at the hotel and discovers this rather interesting toilet attachment ... It's really not a photogenic city!
