The Closing of the Day

I have read a lot today about Charles Kennedy and it saddens me that the press seem to have focused on his flaws, in particular his alcohol problem, and have let it overshadow the man.  

I have no political affiliations but always found Mr Kennedy personable, intelligent, erudite, entertaining and quick witted.  He was a brilliant mind, a faithful servant in our Parliament and had the courage of his convictions to speak out against the the Iraq war, expressing the view that it was in all likelihood an illegal action.  He garnered the support and respect of members from all parties something seldom seen in modern politics.

Losing both his parents in quick succession would be difficult for anyone let alone someone fighting a parliamentary seat in a general election.  I cannot begin to imagine how stressful this must have been and it appears sadly was a little more than Mr Kennedy could contend with.

We all have our demons, some of us struggle every day, some of us hide them well, except from the few that know.... some of us are lucky that we have people that love us and care for us and take time to tell us and that makes more impact than they can ever know

Tonight as the sun slipped away I thought of Mr Kennedy, for him the struggle is over and he is at peace.  A clever man and a skilled politician and our world is a poorer place for his untimely passing
