thanks to all for the great suggestions about capturing books by photograph.  a lot to think about.  even more to try.  in the end, i went with the subtle (very subtle) ins and outs of these all-white reports.  i liked the reductive quality of book-without-spine.  a reference with gratitude to robert ryman's hansa.

in case you are wondering, these reports went floor to ceiling, stack after stack.  all white.  "the records of the united states house of representatives".  a bit surreal.
