Sporting de Gijon ... will they won't they?

An hour before Sporting Gijón's last league match of the season the crowds start to gather to watch it on the big screen.

Sporting are away to Real Betis in Seville. Betis have already won automatic promotion as league leaders and today's matches will decide whether it is Sporting or rival Girona that will take the other automatic promotion place. Girona have a two point advantage so Sporting need to win and rely on Girona losing against mid-table Lugo. If Girona draw then they will be equal on points and Sporting will need to have won by at least two goals to go through on goal difference.

Three hours later and Sproting hae given it their all, having beaten Betis 3-0. Meanwhile the Girona match is in extra time, with Girona leading 1-0. So it looks as if Sporting will have to make do with the play-offs for the final promotion place.

Then... in the final minute of extra time... GOOOOAAAL LUGO!!! The match ends, the cheers go up across Gijón, the church bells ring out and
Sporting Gijon return to La Primera.
