Rendlesham Forest & Sutton Hoo

We stopped in Rendlesham Forest on our way to Visit Sutton Hoo, to capture the dappled light on the fresh young ferns.

Sutton Hoo is the site of a royal ship burial and all its treasures, which had laid undisturbed for almost 1400 years and was discovered just before the outbreak of the 2nd World War.  This was one of the richest graves ever found in Europe and is believed to be of an Anglo Saxon King, who was buried along with his wooden ship, some 37 meters long!  The extra photo is of the iconic face mask which was found in the grave and has come to represent this extraordinary find.  This was a replica, the original mask and other treasures are now kept in the British Museum.
