Dresden

The Frauenkirche. Destroyed on February 15th 1945, when the fireball started by the bombing raid of the 13th had reached over 1000 degrees centigrade, and the pillars supporting the dome exploded.
The rubble flattened during the '40's and 50's with sheep grazing over the surrounding area - the GDR was ideologically opposed to reconstruction (not that any of that happened in Britian either).
Then a big local campaign to have the church rebuilt, culminating in the decision post reunification to do just that with a lot of local support. Work started in 1994, completed 2005.
The old cross atop the old church sits within the new church, mangled by the heat of the fire. The new cross atop the church was donated by Britain, and made by the son of one of the airmen who flew on the bombing mission. Inside the church, the cross on the altar is made of nails from the old Coventry cathedral, donated by Dresden's twin city.
There will be those who will not like the reconstruction on the basis it is not "real". I am not one of them - the building seems much loved by local people, and with the reconstruction of the rest of the buildings around it and the recreation of the squares and vistas, it makes quite an impact. A kind of resurrection.
Extra - a view of part of the skyline across the Elbe.
