Scarce Swallowtail

Another good butterfly day, although at this time we are in the June Gap. The Spring species found in abundance are over and the July/August species which feed on annualt plants are not yet with us.

This Scarce Swallowtail gets its name because it is rarely if ever seen in Britain. It is fairly frequent in some areas of France. Appropriately it is feeding here on Swallow-wort.

The Extra today is a Purple Hairstreak. The purple colour is on the upper wing surface.

Sadly our butterfly expert friends have had to leave us for the Pyrenees. We have enjoyed their help and enthusiasm.
