The rich valley of the Dordogne

A day of culture and beauty.
The main picture was taken from the hilltop fortified village of Domme where we were early in the market and the coffee shop. Peregrines were on the cliff face.

The picture looks downstream across to the village of La Roque-Gageac. Touristy but a delight early in the day.
Then to the left is our main target for the day, the Chateau de Castelnaud with its superb Museum of medieval warfare. It here in 1442 that the French King Charles VII laid siege to the castle which was held by the English. After holding out for three weeks a treacherous English Captain handed over the keys in return for his life and the sum of 400 crowns. In effect this was the end of English land ownership in Aquitaine. Until of course the late twentieth century. How Europe might have been different if one man had been of stronger character.
Our final visit was to the Museum of Nuts. No laughing please. First course tonight will be Walnuts drizzled with Walnut oil.
Today's Extra is just a small corner of La Belle France. You can see why people come to live here.
