Synchronised Crunching

Wanting a garden blip this afternoon I had a safari with the macro and a good job I did! These little monsters were happily crunching through the leaves of one of my favourite shrubs...at a pace!

On going to my insect book it seems they are the larvae of the sawfly not some cute butterfly or moth caterpillar that I should be nurturing at all. This is Croesus Septentrionalis, around May to September and it feeds mainly on birch and alder though in this case tortured hazel. Well it won't be around for much longer I feel here! Before the sad demise of our chickens we never had a problem with snails or creepy things - they were just eaten up.
