Cascade

The sun was shining (just) and the rain had stopped, so it was time for some fresh air and (moderate) exercise. I was tempted by another trip to the coast, but time was marching on and I also had to fit in the shopping, so instead I headed off 5 miles down the road to Virginia Water Lake.

The lake was created in the reign of George II in Windsor Great Park. Once the play ground of the Royals, it is now a popular location for walkers, cyclists, picnicers and the like. The more energetic can take the 4.5 mile walk round the lake, taking in a cascade, the Lepis Magna Ruins (built using stones from the Roman City of Lepis Magna gifted to George IV in 1816), the Valley Gardens with Totem Pole.

The cascade was originally created in the 1750s, but was destroyed in 1768 when a causeway collapsed. The current cascade was built when the lake was enlarged by George III in the 1780s.
