Love In The Afternoon

Lovely to be able to spend time down our field with my dog this afternoon. Lots of bugs about. Think I got an Essex skipper but the stars were these, I think, six spot burnet moths. They were whirring about amongst the grass seed heads and homing in on thistle flowers near the bonfire.

PS They could be five spot burnets but I was going on the fact that they were feeding on thistle flowers.

PPS Well I never! I found this cocoon, pictured in extra photos, a week or so ago and then lost the position of it. Stumbled across it again today complete with a black exuvia. Just learnt that it belongs to a burnet moth! :)
