Toyota City: Toyota Stadium

Zero T - Refusal (Calibre Remix)

Established in 2001, Toyota Stadium, designed by Kisho Kurokawa Architect and Associates, was built adjacent to the Toyota Bridge to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the municipalisation of Toyota City.

Designed for soccer and rugby games, Toyota Stadium is the alternative home stadium for the Nagoya Grampus Eight, the area's soccer team for the national J-League and the home stadium of the Toyota Verbliz, a corporate rugby team belonging to Toyota Motors. The stadium also holds concerts and festival events.

The stadium was originally designed to accommodate 60,000 spectators due to its nomination to be one of fifteen cities for the Japan World-Cup Semi-Final Game. However, as the nominations reduced, so was the seating capacity to 45,000 during mid-design. Kurokawa designed inclined vertical wall pillars to support the seating sections, and four huge independent masts to carry the roof to accommodate the spectators.

In order to enable a reduction in overall weight, the entire structure is steel covered with fireproof pre-cast slabs. The structural concept of the Toyota Stadium was done incollaboration with Ove ARUP & Partners Japan Ltd.

I love coming here at night when it's both crowded and empty. The Toyota Rock festival was fantastic with a lot of crazy people walking about, dancing to crazy music. Riding past it at night, it feels like a mammoth of a beast is following you, its masts appearing like antennae. It's quite monumental. The stadium also has a restaurant with a fantastic view and a public pool in the basement.
