Princess Bride

I'm challenging myself to ask strangers if I can take their picture but remain cautious. A princess surrounded by her royal court was a no-brainer.

I asked if this was her quinceañera. (It was.) Similar to debutante traditions, quinceañeras serve as young Hispanics’ official entrance into society and womanhood.

When I saw the shoes I dropped my jaw in mock surprise. The girls giggled and began petting their hair nervously.

We were at the top of the Rose Garden. A crowd of family of friends were gathered below. In between were four flights of jagged stone steps.

If walking down those steps in those shoes in blinding heat with elegance and grace don't make you a woman, I have no idea what will.
