Porthmadog

Tuesday saw my friends and I take a day-trip from Tywyn up to Pwllheli and Porthmadog. Not a steam train in sight today, as the Arriva Trains Wales diesel was our selected mode of transport up the Cambrian coast.

This day out was more about the journey, and the scenery, than the destinations as we had only about 30 minutes in Pwllheli (the end of this particular line) before taking the relatively short journey back to Porthmadog.

Our first port-of-call was the Station Inn in Porthmadog (pictured) which was once the booking and ticket office for the station. The beer was good although the lunch options were, to say the least, limited. A coffee and cake at the cafe of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway filled some of the gaps before it was time to catch the main-line diesel train back to Tywyn.

There are plenty of interesting places en route, e.g. Barmouth, Harlech castle, etc. and these can be explored using a 'day rover' ticket when one has the time to do so. Tuesday wasn't that day, so a return visit is on the cards on some future visit to mid-Wales.
