Sgwarnog: In the Field

Burnet

After two hours in the dentist's chair I sought respite in the informal urban meadow across the road.

Lying just the other side of Bradford Beck from the threatened "Big Field" where I'd recently seen a Golden Y this small patch of what planners like to call wasteland is another of Shipley's butterfly hot spots. Today I saw my first local Common Blue and Marbled Whites of the year alongside a thriving colony of burnet moths. This one  is an example of the Narrow-bordered 5-spot Burnet, which seems to be more numerous in our locale than the 6-spot.
