What is this strange plant?

This is a very strange plant which is now starting to take over the garden! It has these big spiky leaves and a very strange flower which starts as the thistle looking thing then develops to the long stem with what looks like "venus fly traps" all the way up it.  Very odd... I've never seen it catch anything though but it is definitely starting to take root and spread.  The leaves, although looking a bit scary, are in fact very soft..  Strange thing nature.
