Sundown over the pier

Summertime Thursday nights in Weston Super Mare are more about motorbikes than sunsets, as the Royal British Legion have a fund raiser there, with several hundreds of bikes and bikers lined up on the promenade, but the sinking Sun caught my eye as it dropped behind the Grand Pier.

As well as motorcycles, there was a vast collection this evening of Honda Goldwings, and the extra photo looks strangely similar to a fleet of yachts in moorings, with the radio aerials taking the place of the masts. Armchairs on wheels. Quite surreal. But back to the pier.

The pier was built in the first years of the 1900's and extends 400metres into what is sometimes the sea, but more usually the sandy mudflats. It's been gutted by fire twice, most recently seven years ago, a few months after being sold and refurbished.
