Hakea Laurina

This is a beautiful Australian native from Southwest Australia and is now widely cultivated, which is not surprising. I found it today in my friend's garden. It is also known as Pincushion Hakea or Emu Bush. The pale styles emerge from a deep pink globular centre and are produced from April to August.  The respite of beautiful native flowers in winter cannot be underestimated in Australia. My extra is of an immature flower, just as the styles are starting to uncurl. I decided against a macro for this as the flowers look so lovely clustered on the bush.
