Phare des Baleines

On the left is the Tour des Balaines dating from 1682 and on the right the octagonal Phare des Baleines dating from 1854 and still used today.

We went out for an orientation tour of the island this morning and stopped for coffee here by the Lighthouse of Whales. After a wander around and some photos we went on to the harbour town of St Martins where we had lunch and are determined to return another day as there seems to be loads to see (and photograph) and loads of little streets full of interesting shops for Marian. I think there's another lighthouse too. It's the first time we've had to pay for parking and not understanding the machine I only got an hour and a half.

There are lots and lots of bikes all using the islands dedicated cycle lanes. The most interesting one we saw today was a tandem with a normal riding position behind and a recumbent position in the front. Seems like a good idea to me.
