Little India

This morning I went shopping to find a birthday present for my friend who's birthday is on Friday. She's previously mentioned that she'd seen some jewellery she liked at Mala India, an Indian store here in Waterloo, so l decided to go and have a look.

Mala India is part of a non-profit making organisation, who's objective is to help underprivileged children in India.

It's an amazing place situated on a small industrial estate, and the first thing that greets you is a huge ornate Elephant on wheels made out of wood. Then on entering the store you really feel like you've entered 'Little India'.

Apparently it took two years to convert the old warehouse into a luxurious Indian House and all the internal woodwork originates from a mansion house built in the 1850's in Chetti Nadu for a wealthy family of the Chettyars chaste.

There are different rooms from a 'spice room' to jewellery, clothing, books, furniture and even a music room, and all their products are brought over from India.

It really was an interesting place to visit, and I was going to blip a photo of the elephant but thought this photo had better colours and perspective. You can see the elephant in my blipfolio
