186/365: Brooding evening sky at Pier Cottage

Back-blip (first of many!)

Arrived in Coniston in the afternoon after a couple of days up near Keswick. Managed to "sort of" get my tent pitched before the rain arrived.

We always stay at Pier Cottage at the far north end of the lake. It was where Donald Campbell kept Bluebird as he attempted to beat his own world water speed record. There is archive footage of him filmed here, setting off before his last fateful attempt - it always makes me feel a bit strange to watch it. It is also where the famous Steam Yacht Gondola (seen in the photo - now owned by the National Trust) is kept and where it sets off each morning. It's a stunning boat - the wood and paintwork really is a work of art.

It's a lovely site, with the best view of the lake that you could ask for. The family who own the site are such nice people too.
