The spectacle of super yachts

The mighty J-Class yachts are back in the Solent to help commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes.
Southampton's own Velsheda featured in today’s PolaroidBlip and the equally impressive American Ranger are berthed in Southampton’s Ocean Village with crews preparing for racing in the Solent from Saturday. The two battled it out in the J-Class Regatta at Falmouth a couple of weeks ago, along with the Dutch Lionheart. All three are entered for the bi-centenary regatta at Cowes
These fabulous boats are guaranteed to be impressive in full race trim on the Solent again.
The RYS Bicentenary Regatta which starts on Saturday, and runs through the weekend and next week until Friday, will feature racing for a broad mixture of boats, from modern 23 ft J/70 speedsters to the majestic 130 ft J Class boats, in what is being described as an amazing celebration of 200 years of yacht racing.

The imposing J-Class yachts were last in the Solent three years ago for their own regatta, organised by the Royal Southampton. The J Class has its roots in the Solent and the oldest sporting race in the world, the America’s Cup.
