If you can't beat them...

Penrith Castle

A rather uninspiring shot of the castle, which I don't think I have blipped before.  I took it while hanging around at the station waiting for Katkatkat's train down from Edinburgh.  After meeting her we moved on to our usual alternate Wednesday meet up with Kanyl and Mrs Kanyl.

Penrith Castle is a medieval castle believed to have been built on the site of a roman fort.  It seems to have been built between the 1390s and the 1440s.  The reason was the habit the Scots had for border reeving  (raiding).  I had a friend who was a church warden of one of the Eden Valley churches.  One of the wardens duties was " to defend the fords of Eden against the marauding scot".  He always claimed it was something to do with Glasgow holiday week!
