Marmalade Hoverfly

This is one of the more common Hoverflies which was feeding on a summer poppy. Not that there is much summer feeling from the weather.

There are 276 known species of Hoverfly in the UK although only 40 or so are common. Fortunately most are easily identified by their colours and shapes... I'm not nerd enough to get a microscope out to check the genitalia for subtle differences in the more difficult to ID!  This one is easy and is known as the Marmalade Hoverfly or, for the more serious spotters, Episyrphus balteatus.
