After Escher

Photographs of the M.C.Escher exhibition are not permitted but the tiles in the toilets provide a reminder of our presence at the Gallery of Modern Art.

There is absolutely no comparison between seeing Escher's work in books and a closeup view of the original, sometimes observing the odd speckle of ink or slight cockling of paper, to appreciate the detail achieved by lithography and woodcut.

Although he is most famous for his impossible perspectives I found his treatment of landscape particularly appealing, such as reflection in a puddle or fish in a leaf-strewn pond. Stunning.
