Walk on By

Went to see a fantastic film last night "Salt of the Earth" about the photographer Solgado. In one memorable moment he looked a polar bear in the eye and said he wouldn't take a picture because it would have no frame. Instead he crawled and rolled with heavy camera equipment over pebbles to take some amazing images of walruses: silhouettes of tusks and raised heads.

I came out of the film both enthused and a little deflated: my pictures will never be in the same league as his. When I was looking at this doorway and thinking of frames, a man shouted down from an upstairs window:

"What are you doing?"

"Taking some pictures," I said.

"Why?"

"For fun. Why not?"

"Because it's my shop" etc etc

I didn't go upstairs for a pizza.
