In Clover

Today's blip is some red clover (Trifolium pratense) growing on a road side verge in the village. Like a selection of other plants it has the special ability of being able to fix nitrogen gas from the atmosphere into biologically useful ammonium which can then be turned into all manner of other things. Having a nitrogen fixing plant in your field increases the fertility of the field and hence you can grow other valuable things afterwards - hence the phrase to be "in clover" - meaning a wealthy farmer who could afford clover.

Very busy day today. On arriving home from work we had a visit from a local gas fitter to quote for a new boiler, then it was straight out the door for a very long council meeting after which it was home and then back out again to check for glow worms in the church yard. Lots of females glowing again and even with our lure we saw no males.
